Infertility Q & A

How is female infertility defined?

For most women, a diagnosis of infertility comes from the inability to naturally become pregnant after a year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. If you're past the age of 35, you may receive an infertility diagnosis after just six months of trying to conceive naturally.

If you’re able to become pregnant, but not stay pregnant long enough to give birth to a healthy baby, you may also receive an infertility diagnosis.

How common is infertility?

An estimated 6.1 million women of reproductive age in the US have difficulty becoming or staying pregnant.

Fertility specialists attribute one-third of infertility issues among couples to women’s problems, one-third to men’s problems, and a final third to either a combination of men’s and women’s problems or unknown factors.

What causes female infertility?

Female infertility is often related to an ovulation problem; polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal imbalance, is one of the most common causes. Uterine fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes, and physical problems within the uterus are other potential causes of female infertility.

Infertility isn’t always caused by an underlying condition or problem. Other factors that can influence your ability to become pregnant include:

  • Being past the age of 35
  • Being overweight or underweight
  • Chronic stress
  • Eating a poor diet
  • Smoking or drinking too much alcohol

How can acupuncture improve female fertility?

As one of the primary healing tools of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has been used to treat male and female infertility for thousands of years.

Today, acupuncture is a widely accepted fertility protocol among reproductive medicine specialists who provide advice or treatments aimed at helping women conceive naturally or with the assistance of in-vitro fertilization.

By placing needles at key energy meridians linked to reproductive organs, acupuncture is used to move the flow of your internal energy to areas that are deficient, empowering local organs and encouraging fertility. Acupuncture also helps to:

  • Create a sense of calm and wellbeing
  • Balance reproductive hormones
  • Improve blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus
  • Alleviate anxiety, stress, and depression

You may require several months of combined acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment before undergoing in-vitro fertilization. Apex Acupuncture designs a treatment protocol with your needs in mind, based on your personal health history and conception goals.
